After a very long stretch of work before Christmas in Kent UK, Harriet and I decided as we were so close to the Dover ferry port it made sense to take a quick four day trip over to Belgium to visit some Christmas markets and soak up a bit of pre Christmas spirit.
Belgium is one of those places that we have always driven through on our way to get somewhere in the past, so we thought it was about time we actually headed there to have a look at what it has to offer (other than some amazing beer of course).
We made Bruges our initial destination to relax for a couple of days and take in some art galleries, architecture, food (and beer) and then headed out into the countryside to visit some of the famous WW1 battle grounds and memorial sites.
The Memorial sites turned out to be quite a sobering and contemplative experience, which is a little different to the usual jovial Campervan Culture videos, but its all interesting stuff nonetheless.
Enjoy!
hello mate
next time your over on this side of the channel keep driving north for about 9 hours and thats me
Hey Jason,
Only 9 hours huh! in case i’ll pop over next weekend…. he he he.
Do intend on driving north at some point though, think Jed has been keen to do it for a while also. We’ll pop in for sure if it happens!
I will give you a spare parts list before you go Al hehehehehe….
After this years Campervanculture trip to North Africa maybe Northern Europe after that? Man I love options..
i was thinking about a trip up to the nordkapp summer 2014, up through Sweden and down through Norway, a few of the more active syncronauts over here would definately be up for it , Maybe a bit of a syncro convoy up to scandinavia after SP2014
I’ve done that trip. Spent some good time in Denmark too. 6 weeks away in all. It was wonderful and surely bucket list stuff.
You are also welcome to Finland đŸ™‚
I really liked this one. Thanks for posting.
An especially good vibe in this city and in the telling of your tale.
Hey Guy’s
I watch your videos as they are posted. I’m getting sucked into documenting camping trips. I live in Oregon and my wife and I have a 84 westy. Is their a certain brand of camera you use?
Thanks,
Earl
Hi Earl,
I dont think we ever settled on an actual camera to use but what ever it is it is usually low tec. I think Alan did this latest on on the iphone. The Gopro usually gives good results with a steady hand and in full light and the Panasonic point and shoot cameras are ok too. We look forward to seeing some of your videos.
Forgot about my camper for a couple of months, watching this has mede me start planning a trip.
Well Done nice video.
Thanks very much for the comments everyone.
I wasn’t sure how this movie would go down what with its kind of sombre ending. Its was a really interesting experience being at the WW1 sites in the wet and freezing cold, somehow brought it home how bleak it must have been.
A little info on Tyne cott memorial cemetery – It is the largest single European / Allied cemetery in the world and all of the crosses in the ground are for soldiers that were found and/or identified. All of the names on the walls are for soldiers missing in action who’s bodies were never recovered.
Really quite breathtaking when you’re standing in front of a wall with names as far as the eye can see.
