Once we had finished our lunch in the sunshine we packed up and got on our way towards the border. We followed a winding road through hills and countryside, through a few towns eventually arriving at the Croatian border at Metlika.
Pulling up to the border things began to feel quite different to everywhere we had been so far. Buildings had a somewhat ramshackle feel to them and mixed with the lack of people around due to the time of year to say it felt a bit backwater would be an understatement. Continue reading →
At the end of 2011 we decided to take a winter holiday. We discussed a few different directions to head in but finally settled on heading down through Europe, but not the obvious Spain or Portugal.
After chatting with Jed and a few others about their experience of traveling in Slovenia and Croatia it was decided that we would follow suit and spend our winter as far down as we could get in the time allowed.
We had about 5 weeks to complete the mission (it would’ve been longer if i hadn’t discovered that my passport was missing before we left….but that’s another story). We planned ourselves a vague route starting from Dunkerque taking in some of Germany with our first stop in Innsbruck, Austria to visit some friends. From there we planned to drive into the Dolomite mountains in the North of Italy and across to Slovenia, then down into Croatia before heading back up into Slovenia, across the top of Italy into the French Alps for Christmas. Part three takes us further down Croatia and to Pag Island. We did plan on staying abit longer than we did on Pag but with temperatures inside the van reaching over 49*C we had to spend lots of time in the sea and drink cold beers to stay cool, bummer hey!!!!
Here is a set of videos from a tour of Europe in our Westfalia Syncro. Basically it involved touring from the UK all the way down to Croatia and back taking in nine countries entered and exited a number of times.
In total 4851km where driven and two mechanical issues, so how did we get on traveling with a 5 year old?, where did we camp?, you will have to watch the videos to find out….
The shop is now closed for Christmas, see you all in the new year. Happy Christmas everyone!
